Bully Proof Your School!
The risks and exposure that schools and school professionals face today are unprecedented. The incidents of Phoebe Prince, Megan Meier, Tyler Clemente and others who have taken their own lives in response to being bullied is a horrifying wake up call to all of us who care deeply about the health and well being of our children.
According to news media reports, teachers and administrators knew about the problem but didn’t seem to know what to do in order to stop it. Our sensationalized media looks for easy targets to blame and ultimately becomes another kind of bully.
The line between victim and bully is often a thin one and can change in an instant. Columbine High School and other similar tragedies can be traced back to bullying victims who “snapped” and then lashed out.
No training or staff development program can guarantee that such a tragedy won’t ever happen again. But with a decade of experience as a therapist, 2 decades as an arts in education presenter and a lifetime of experience being bullied and overcoming the role of “bully magnet”, I am particularly qualified to help teachers and administrators to notice and do something about behaviors that are destructive.
My teacher training programs also offer tools for teachers and administrators to use in managing the ever growing stress of their work which in and of itself can sometimes seem like a bully.
With my professional background helping anxiety and panic attack sufferers get rapid relief I have tools that can help clear the fear a student has of the bully. Students can learn how to stop being “targets” and how to defuse verbal and social aggression, exclusion, teasing, name calling and more.
And I can teach these tools. I can also teach teachers as well as students how to teach the tools as well.
Ultimately we will never eradicate the abuse of power. And we will never fully eliminate bullying from our schools. What we can do is make a radical improvement in the way students handle their internal world and the process through which we create meaning based upon our experiences.
Here are some anonymous evaluations from teachers, counselors & administrators at a recent day long workshop I taught in Houston Texas called, “Bully Proof Your School”:
I have learned techniques that will help me develop skills as a school counselor. The ways to “disarm” a bully are now something I can purposely use. I am glad I attended this seminar and will recommend it to other counselors!
I really enjoyed the role playing. It makes it easier to try out these new ideas
Good strategies for diffusing situations and empowering kids to take control of situations
This presenter was extremely knowledgeable about his subject and I would definitely recommend this workshop to others.
I really liked the “rules of bullying”. Exactly True!
I like the idea of shrinking a problem or person down to size in your mind to alleviate anxiety. I loved the role playing. It was so much fun!
I think these are techniques that older students could go to the younger grades and demonstrate.
It was a great workshop. I got out of it that we need to focus on the reaction to bullying situations by not feeding into the bullying we can hopefully eliminate it.
I enjoyed the “hands on” learning! I do believe this will help the kids in my school and am looking forward to applying what I learned.
